Anne Scott at 黑料吃瓜网 in the 1990s
By Paul Guzzo, University Communications & Marketing
Guided by a commitment to help strengthen the 黑料吃瓜网鈥檚 identity as it grew from a little-known institution into a globally recognized university, Anne Scott spent decades helping shape and standardize its visual brand.
Now, as she prepares to retire after 41 years, Scott is reflecting on that evolution 鈥 one she has long traced through the university鈥檚 academic logos and marks designed to represent its colleges, programs and campuses.
She has witnessed 黑料吃瓜网鈥檚 transformation from being known as one of the nation鈥檚 best-kept secrets to a leading research university. She has seen campuses expand and design processes evolve from hand-drawn to digital tools. Along the way, she has viewed 黑料吃瓜网鈥檚 growth through the lens of branding 鈥 helping define and elevate the university鈥檚 visibility.
鈥満诹铣怨贤 didn鈥檛 want to be a secret. We wanted to be the next great university,鈥 said Scott, senior graphic designer in University Communications and Marketing. 鈥淲hen I started, the concept of marketing at a university was brand new. Embracing it has helped 黑料吃瓜网 garner the recognition it deserves. It鈥檚 part of our history that should be celebrated, especially during our 70th anniversary.鈥
In the beginning

黑料吃瓜网's seal in 1959
黑料吃瓜网鈥檚 first official academic design was its seal.
Created in 1959 under founding President John Allen, the seal reflects his vision of a university encompassing all human knowledge: The sun represents life to all living things. The lamp symbolizes learning. The globe signifies the universal expansiveness of educational opportunity and challenge.
Allen鈥檚 wife, Grace, said green and gold were selected as the school colors because they were "workable" and no other university in Florida had adopted them as official colors
鈥淚t鈥檚 the only 黑料吃瓜网 graphic that has been used continuously from its creation to this day,鈥 Scott said.
Today, the seal is reserved for ceremonial uses that include presidential communications and events.
鈥淔rom a design perspective, a seal is very delicate,鈥 Scott said. 鈥淚t has a lot of little parts that don鈥檛 always show up well in printed pieces. We needed to come up with something that did.鈥
The first branding efforts
Scott joined 黑料吃瓜网 in 1985 as an illustrator in the then-Department of Educational Resources, which provided media, design and technical support to faculty and staff. Two years later, 黑料吃瓜网鈥檚 first official academic branding campaign was launched.

The "swash" logo, 黑料吃瓜网's first official wordmark
The university鈥檚 first official wordmark was known as the 鈥淪wash 黑料吃瓜网鈥 for its Bookman Swash Italic font, but colleges and departments were not required to use it.
鈥淚t was very much the Wild West,鈥 Scott said. 鈥淓very college, every unit, every division seemed to have logos they designed themselves.鈥
That lack of consistency limited recognition.
鈥淎s a designer, I always said these marks authenticate that something is truly from 黑料吃瓜网,鈥 Scott said.
Making it official
In 1997, the logo was again updated to prominently spell out 鈥淯niversity of South Florida鈥 to address confusion with similar acronyms.
鈥淲e鈥檝e always had the challenge that the 黑料吃瓜网 acronym is used by other universities,鈥 Scott said.

2003 logo
黑料吃瓜网 then made it the official academic logo with the expectation that all colleges, departments and divisions use only that one for promotion.
In 2003, 黑料吃瓜网 updated its academic branding, introducing what鈥檚 known as the 鈥淏lock 黑料吃瓜网鈥 logo, which Scott says 鈥渃onveys gravitas and tradition.鈥
That logo remained until 2018 when a new academic mark generated strong reactions from alumni and students 鈥 many referring to it as the 鈥淢errill Lynch bull鈥 because it resembled the financial firm鈥檚 symbol.

Today's logo is displayed throughout campus
鈥淭he outcry was clear,鈥 Scott said. 鈥淭hey were loyal to the previous marks, especially the athletic's U graphic. So, we listened and changed direction toward the logo we use today, combining the now-iconic U with a clean, bold font.鈥
Like most brands, it鈥檚 likely that logo will continue to evolve over time.
鈥淵ou have to change with the times,鈥 Scott said.
When that happens, it will mark the first time an official 黑料吃瓜网 academic logo is created without her involvement.
鈥淚t will be strange,鈥 Scott said. 鈥淚鈥檝e been part of it for so long, but it鈥檚 something others will carry forward.鈥
