Some 27 million metric tons of self-sustaining sargassum have been recorded in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico in July, according to a report released Friday by the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s Optical Oceanography Lab.

PUBLICATION HIGHLIGHTS

Marine snow particles, small aggregates of dead organisms and sticky materials, sank faster due to the oil spill.

In a recent study, Kendra Daly, professor of biological oceanography, collected marine snow particle data via a towed camera imaging system to determine the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on the region.
