2025-2026 academic year highlights

A leadership change occurred in July 2025, when Dr. George P. Philippidis was appointed acting Dean of PCGS.

Dr. Philippidis, in collaboration with ϳԹ and industry partners, was awarded grants by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to develop sustainable and cost-effective red tide mitigation technologies.

Dr. Haldar and Dr. Ghebremichael launched the EPA-funded Pollution Prevention (P2) project. The project focuses on energy and water conservation, as well as the reduction of hazardous chemicals within the food and beverage manufacturing industry in the Tampa Bay area. It engages multiple graduate students and will be integrated into courses to support experiential learning.

PCGS received wide publicity from news stories in the region (Tampa Fox News and Sarasota ABC News), nationwide (The Weather Channel), and worldwide (USA Today) for the red tide mitigation research conducted by Dr. Philippidis’ research group in collaboration with ϳԹ’s Chemistry Department.

Dr. Joseph Dorsey was promoted to Professor of Instruction at PCGS.

Dr. Thomas Henry (T.H.) Culhane, Climate Mitigation Concentration Director, was recognized by ϳԹ with the Outstanding Community Engaged Award and the 2025 ϳԹ Innovation in Online Design and Teaching Award.

Student Tasnim Diana was recognized by ϳԹ for her prestigious Fulbright Scholarship with which she joined PCGS to pursue a Master of Arts.

PCGS started offering its undergraduate course “Introduction to Global Sustainability” (IDS 2231) in both Spring and Fall semesters to undergraduate students from all ϳԹ Colleges and increased the enrollment cap in response to strong demand. The course, designated as both General Education and Global Citizens Project, was developed by Dr. Ghebremichael, has been taught for several summers, and is now taught by Dr. Bates.

PCGS, in partnership with the University of East London and the Royal Docklands Center for Sustainability in the UK, hosted the 2nd annual online joint symposium entitled “Modular Adaptive Resource Systems (MARS) Project: On-Earth and Off-Earth پDzԲ”

PCGS awarded $19,000 in scholarships to seven exceptional students through the Patel Distinguished Scholar award, the Butz Scholarship, and the Amy & Michael Drake Scholarship. The students were recognized for academic excellence, leadership, and dedication to advancing sustainability solutions.

Two high-impact career fairs were organized to connect about 160 students and alumni with 36 exhibitors across the sustainability and environmental sectors. These events expanded interdisciplinary engagement, strengthened employer relationships, and created direct pathways to internships and full-time jobs.
